Equity and local economy

Creating safe, equitable places to live and work which support local prosperity and international fair trade.

Why is this important?

Local economy:

Small businesses together contribute to the town’s character. The High Street would be soulless without local shops, cafes and businesses - but they need to be used to keep going. They provide an income for local business owners and their profits mainly go back into the local economy rather than to large company shareholders who may live anywhere. 95% of Wincanton’s High Street shops are independently run.

Wincanton Chamber of Commerce’s role is to support and encourage their members and help promote a healthy local economy. Their associate membership of the Somerset Chamber of Commerce means that they can access help through the chamber system at local, county and national levels.

Independent and local retailers:

When you walk around Wincanton town centre you realise that almost everything you need is here. This is the range of fantastic local retailers found along, or with a stone’s throw of, the High Street:

Fair international trade:

We all buy goods which are grown and produced overseas such as bananas, chocolate, tea, coffee, cotton, rice, sugar. The Fairtrade Foundation sets social, economic and environmental standards for both companies and the farmers and workers who grow the products. If we buy products with the Fairtrade mark we are helping to promote these standards.

Shop locally to support our own farmers; buy Fairtrade to help overseas farmers, like ours, get a fair deal
